Ear Training

The Ear Training tool plays you a note and challenges you to find it on the keyboard by ear. Four drills work different listening muscles, and every guess gets a hint — try higher or try lower — so you home in rather than flounder.

You can answer with the mouse, your computer keyboard, or a MIDI keyboard — see Playing the keyboard and Playing with a MIDI keyboard.

The four drills

A round, step by step

  1. Click Play to hear the prompt (click it again any time to replay).
  2. Play your guess on the keyboard. Wrong guesses earn a higher/lower hint; the right note turns green and the round is solved.
  3. Stuck? Reveal shows the answer (the round is marked as revealed rather than solved).
  4. Next deals a new round and plays it for you.

Your stats

Each drill keeps its own running record: rounds played, how often you get it first try, and your current and best streaks. When you're signed in, your stats are saved to your account and follow you between devices; signed out, they live only in your browser.

Ear training is free practice — there's no schedule and no grading, so play as much or as little of any drill as you like.
